Surrogacy

Our journey to parenthood is a very difficult and challenging one, and it will be an emotional rollercoaster.

Surrogacy— I cannot emphasize enough how beautiful it is that there are women who are compassionate enough to help fulfill someone else’s wish to have a child. In our situation, this would involve high-tech surrogacy. Below is a brief explanation of what that means.

High-tech surrogacy?

High-tech surrogacy is an advanced medical procedure in which a surrogate carries an embryo that is not genetically related to her. The high-tech form of surrogacy means that an IVF (or ICSI) treatment is performed, in which eggs and sperm from the intended parents or donors are combined.

HTS offers an innovative solution for couples or individuals who, for medical or other reasons, are unable to carry a child themselves.

  • Consultation and preperation: After an informational consultation and a positive medical recommendation, the process begins. The trajectory starts with extensive medical and psychological screening of the intended parents and the egg donor (if applicable). Next, the proposed surrogate is screened for medical and psychological suitability. The final step before treatment begins is a meeting with a lawyer, during which agreements are drawn up between all parties (intended parents, egg donor—if applicable—and surrogate) to regulate the further course of the process. The average duration of this preparatory phase is 9–12 months.

  • In-vitro fertilization (IVF): Eggs and sperm from the intended parents, or from an egg donor/sperm donor, are collected and fertilized in the laboratory to create embryos.

  • Embryo transfer: The surrogate undergoes hormonal treatment to prepare her uterus for implantation of the embryo.

  • Pregnancy and birt: The surrogate is invited for an initial pregnancy ultrasound. When a heartbeat is visible on the scan and the embryo is developing well, the treatment is considered successful. The surrogate, together with the intended parents, is then referred to a specialist in her own region. The surrogate carries the pregnancy to term, and after birth the child is entrusted to the intended parents.
